Community and Population Nutrition Assessment

Define the population before measuring it

Community nutrition assessment describes who is affected, what is happening, where, when, why, which assets already exist, and what residents consider important. Begin with an operational population definition: geography, age, eligibility, setting, time period, and relevant social characteristics. Then specify the decision the assessment must support. A county estimate cannot automatically answer a neighborhood question, and clinic records cannot represent people who never reach the clinic. Engage residents and partners before finalizing measures so the process does not mistake available data for community priorities. Assessment is iterative: define, collect, validate, interpret, prioritize, act, and reassess.
